Iwobi Escapes Critics From Emery

Arsenal and Nigeria international attacker, Alex Iwobi has escaped what could have been a verbal hammer from Gunners’ boss, Unai Emery, as the former Spanish gaffer refused to direct blame to any of his players over their 1-0 loss to BATE Borisov in the UEFA Europa League.

Although many critics are of the view that Iwobi had a paltry game on the night in Belarus and was one of the major culprits in Arsenal’s lame duck outing, Emery insists all his players gave their best.

Emery went on to note that Iwobi and the others did well in the previous match against Huddersfield Town, in the English Premier League, hence his decision to stick with the ‘winning team.’

While that decision obviously backfired, the former Sevilla of Spain handler refused to single out any of his lads on the night for falling short of expectation, as he argued that those who were absent might not have made any difference had they played instead.

Instead of directing the blame on his men he rather defended, after starting the trio of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lucas Torreira and Denis Suarez on the bench until the latter stages, with Mesut Ozil not even in the squad.

Iwobi’s coach argued: “Every player is OK to play. Those that were here, we can win with them and we deserved that.

“Last week we won and we played with the same players. For me today there was no difference to the performance.

“We deserved to win but didn’t get the result. They were very organised defensively and they found the moment in the game.

“It’s not for one player or another. We can win with every player and lose with the same players.”
