NUJ Chairman Hoarding Christmas Rice Donated By Kwara Govt - Ex-scribe, Ayanda Alleges

The former Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara State Council, Comrade Omotayo Ayanda, has called for the immediate suspension of the State Working Committee, led by Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, citing numerous constitutional violations and intimidation.

Speaking at a press conference in Ilorin, Ayanda alleged that the State Working Committee violated several sections of the NUJ constitution by involving the police in internal union matters.

Ayanda revealed that he was summoned by the Kwara State Police Command over allegations regarding a news report he authored, where he accused he Ahmed Lateef led excos of hoarding rice donations by the Kwara state government for journalists in the state to celebrate Christmas.

The former Secretary also criticized the union’s leadership for failing to make meaningful move to secure the release of imprisoned journalist Rowland Olonishuwa since September 2024, stating that the State Working Committee is more focused on silencing critics and perceived oppositions than addressing pressing critical issues affecting its members welfare.

Ayanda who stated till date many of the members have not received the rice donations, also highlighted other series of alleged irregularities under the current leadership, including illegal suspensions of members, censorship of members speech and writing, and also the outright exclusion of qualified members from union activities.

He called on the State Executive Council comprising leadership of chapel to assume leadership of the council in line with the provisions of NUJ constitution and restore order.

It would be recalled that the legitimacy of the current executive has been a subject of litigation at the Industrial court sitting in Ibadan over allegations of procedural violations and electoral mal practices.
