Boko Haram, ISWAP Conflict Intensifies In Lake Chad Region, Leading To Heavy Casualties

Clashes between two factions of Boko Haram, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad (JAS) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have escalated in the Lake Chad region, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.
According to intelligence sources available to Zagazola Makama, the renewed conflict is fueled by ideological and territorial disagreements.
ISWAP continues to push for stricter governance under Islamic law, while JAS adheres to a more localized insurgency approach.
In an attempt to mediate the dispute, Bakura Doro, also known as Abu Ummaima, reportedly reached out to the ISWAP Shura Council to propose negotiations. However, the attempt collapsed, leading to increased violence.
The conflict is not limited to the Lake Chad Basin; it has spread into Nigeria’s North West and North Central regions, where the two extremist groups are competing for control over smuggling routes, recruitment bases, and local support. The rivalry has even led to clashes with local bandit factions, further complicating the security situation.

Recent intelligence suggests that Bakura-led Boko Haram cells in Kwarangal, Ali Mondula, and Libi Soro are sending trained fighters to reinforce Saddiku-led camps in Niger State.
These fighters, under the command of a lieutenant named Mallam Bara, are being deployed to confront Dogo Gide, a notorious bandit leader who split from Boko Haram and established his own faction in the North West and North Central.
Dogo Gide has positioned himself as a protector of local communities from both Boko Haram and ISWAP, intensifying the conflict in areas like Madawaki and Allawa in Niger State.

Meanwhile, Boko Haram has been regaining control of ISWAP camps in northern Lake Chad, raising concerns over potential attacks on military bases in the region.
The failed peace talks between JAS and ISWAP have only exacerbated the fighting, with both groups growing weaker. This division could, however, create openings for counter terrorism forces to capitalize on their rivalry.
