Nigerian Workers Order Immediate Halt Of Gas, Crude Supply To Dangote Refinery

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has ordered its members nationwide to immediately suspend the supply of gas and crude oil to the Dangote Refinery.

The directive, issued in a letter dated Saturday by PENGASSAN’s General Secretary, Lumumba Okugbawa, followed the refinery’s recent dismissal of over 800 employees.

According to the union, the mass sack was linked to the workers’ decision to join PENGASSAN, an action the association described as a violation of their constitutional rights.

As part of the industrial action, members have been instructed to shut down all crude oil supply valves to the refinery, halt loading operations for any vessel headed there, and immediately cut off gas supply through the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC).

“The management of Dangote Refinery has disengaged our members for exercising their right to unionise. Instead of engaging meaningfully, they resorted to propaganda to justify this illegality,” the union stated.

PENGASSAN further directed all branch chairmen to enforce compliance with the shutdown order and provide updates on progress. The letter concluded with the union’s solidarity slogan: “Injury to one, injury to all.”

This development comes as the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery faces backlash after confirming that 800 workers were dismissed on allegations of “sabotage.”

The shutdown threat is expected to significantly impact operations at Africa’s largest refinery if not quickly resolved.
