By-election: Exclude LP, Face Legal Action – Abure Faction Threatens INEC

The Julius Abure-led Labour Party, LP, has threatened a legal action on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, if it omits its candidates from the ballot in the August 16 scheduled bye-election.
Recall that INEC excluded the names of LP candidates from its list on August 2 by-election, a move that sparked a protest march to the commission’s Abuja headquarters last week.
It was gathered that the candidates emerged from primaries conducted by the Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, in spite of a leadership tussle ravaging the party.

The factional National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement on Tuesday asked INEC to publish the party’s candidates’ names and ensure its logo is on the ballot.
According to him, the Electoral Act 2022 allows any political party excluded from an election to approach the court for a remedy.

“The leadership of the Labour Party has advised that if the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, goes ahead to conduct the August 16, 2025, bye-election without publishing the names of its candidates and ensuring that its logo appears on the ballot, it will seek the nullification of the election in line with the provision of the law,” the statement read.
