Obey Latest Court Of Appeal Judgement On Osun LGs- NULGE Tasks Tinubu, Others

• Warns Against Payment of Osun LG Funds to Impostors
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has issued a stern warning to federal financial institutions and top government officials against flouting the latest judgment of the Court of Appeal affirming the tenure of democratically elected local government officials in Osun State.

In a strongly worded press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, the President General of NULGE, Comrade Aliyu Haruna Kankara, decried what he described as a “coordinated attempt to undermine local government autonomy” in Osun State by recognizing and empowering individuals not constitutionally authorized to manage local council funds.

The President-General called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to kindly address as a matter of urgency the matter the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the Minister of Finance to immediately halt any move that could enable impostors to take control of Osun local government funds.
“Let it be clearly understood that only career officers—specifically Directors of Finance & Supplies and Directors of Administration & General Services—are authorized signatories to Local Government accounts, as laid out by law,” he said. “No chairmen or political appointees whose tenure is in dispute should be allowed to interfere in this process.”
Kankara referenced a controversial letter dated June 10, 2025, from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, which suggested that political officeholders in the state—many of whose legitimacy is being contested—could sign documents for the operation of Local Government accounts. NULGE described the letter as “an aberration” and a “gross violation” of constitutional order.
He further cited the June 13, 2025, ruling by the Court of Appeal in Akure, which affirmed the tenure of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chairmen elected into Osun’s Local Governments, thereby nullifying any claim to office by opposition elements who are yet to be recognized by law.

“This is a direct affront on the judiciary and a deliberate attempt to reverse the gains of democracy,” Kankara noted, adding that continued withholding of Osun’s Local Government allocations from January 2025 till date was punishing the grassroots population unjustly.
The union expressed its dismay at what it described as “silent sabotage” of the Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling on Local Government fiscal autonomy, calling the CBN’s inaction “unacceptable” and urging full compliance with the law.
He further warned that any attempt to release Osun LG funds to individuals other than legally designated signatories would amount to financial recklessness, and could attract legal consequences.
NULGE urged the Tinubu administration to live up to its legacy of defending federalism and grassroots governance—a cause the President famously championed during his time as Lagos State Governor.
“Mr. President, you fought for Local Government autonomy. Do not allow your legacy to be desecrated by agents of impunity who seek to return us to the dark days of centralized interference,” Kankara stated.

He also used the opportunity to commend NULGE members in Osun for their resilience and urged them to remain patient and law-abiding as the Union continues to press for full justice and restoration of lawful governance structures at the grassroots.
