June 12: Youths, CSOs Stage Rally In Osogbo, Make Demands To FG, Osun Govt

Scores of youths in Osun state have on Thursday staged a peaceful rally for the celebration of June 12 in the remembrance of MKO Abiola.

The youths who converged at Ayetoro junction marched through Igbona market, Ajegunle spare parts market, Old Garage, popular Olaiya junction, Aregbe and later terminated at Ogo-Oluwa.

They called on federal government and states to implement MKO Abiola’s policies for the betterment of all Nigerians.

Speaking, NANS Zone D General Secretary, Babatunde Aboke, said Nigerians have never had a president that had the vision and passion for his people like MKO Abiola.

According to Aboke, “MKO preached free education, free healthcare and freedom of movement.”

Giving reason for their decision to join the rally, the NANS Zone D General Secretary said “We are not here today as students of history, students of Osun state and a reasonable Nigerians, but we are here to celebrate and to remind our government that the promises of MKO Abiola have failed by the leadership of the federal government, state governments and our leaders.

“We want to remind them to go back to the history and promises made by MKO Abiola on free education but here in Nigeria today education is difficult for us.”

Also, Wole Oladapo, told newsmen that they are not using the rally to appeal to the government but making their demands known.

“We strongly make a demand to President Bola Tinubu to jettison that idea of 5% tax that will bring another hardship on Nigerians.

“We are saying that inflation should be arrested now via sound economy policies, via agricultural department targeted at ward farmers in Nigeria.

“We are making demands that Nigeria should be able to speak freely and go to sleep without thinking that they will be arrested the next day.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Osun Civil Societies Coalition, Comrade Waheed Lawal, lauded federal government for recognizing MKO Abiola as the winner June 12, 1993 presidential election and giving him the highest honour that any president can take.

He, therefore, demanded that whatever entitlement accrued for any president elected in Nigeria should be given to the family of late Abiola.

He called on government to compensate families of those who lost their lives in the struggle and those put in detention for same struggle so that their families will know their suffering was not in vain.

He also urged Osun government to strive on the employment of teachers into the state’s schools saying “they have done the interview, they should do the needful on time.”

“Osun government should do the needful in terms of security of lives and property, they should care for the generality of people” he added.
