CDHR Demands Rehabilitation Of 53 Released Prisoners By Gov Adeleke
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights,(CDHR), Osun chapter, has called on Governor Ademola Adeleke for immediate and concerted action towards ensuring a robust rehabilitation of the 53 prisoners recently given prerogatives of mercy.
CDHR in a statement issued and signed by its state chairman, Comrade Olowu Emmanuel ,on Wednesday, said it is constitutional for pardoned prisoners to undergo rehabilitation in order to enable them to properly reintegrated into the society.
Quoting Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Osun State 2018, Olowu said that the Section 463, sub-section 2, said: “The prisoner released under subsection (1) of this section shall undergo a rehabilitation program in a government facility to enable him to be properly reintegrated to the society.
He added that PART 45 – PAROLE 46 section 468 sub-section 2 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2015 states that “A prisoner released under subsection (1) of this section shall undergo a rehabilitation program in a government facility or any other appropriate facility to enable him to be properly reintegrated to the society.”

While calling on the Governor to act fast on the demand of the Osun CDHR, Olowu said “As you strive to uphold the ethos of justice and humanity, these prisoners must receive adequate support of successful transition back into their communities.
“We urge you, to take immediate and concerted action towards ensuring that robust rehabilitation programs are established and funded for those pardoned as stated in a letter of commutation dated December 24th, 2024. This is not only a moral imperative but also a societal necessity as we seek to reduce recidivism and foster safer communities.
“We therefore like to inform you that for a successful rehabilitation program, you are to collaborate with key stakeholders including, The Controller Of Nigeria Correctional Service Osun State Command, The Chief Judge of the state, The Attorney General of the state, and Civil Society Organizations in the state, for the creation of comprehensive framework for rehabilitation as they can offer valuable insights and resources for the rehabilitation exercises.

“In conclusion, we respectfully request your leadership to see this issue of rehabilitation as not just a necessity but mandatory since the law stipulates it, furthermore, the Rehabilitation exercise will provide a pathway to a better and secure future for us all” the statement reads in part.
Blaze Newz recalls that Governor Adeleke through his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, announced the prerogative of mercy on the 53 prisoners on December 26,2024 after the report of one Segun Olowokere sentence to death by an Osun Court rented the media space.
