BREAKING: Speaker Bows To Pressure, Withdraws Controversial Counter Subversion Bill
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has withdrawn the controversial Counter Subversion Bill.
The development followed the outrage which trailer the bill.
Abbas announced the withdrawal of the bill on Wednesday in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Musa Krishi.
DAILY POST had reported the introduction of the bill, which contains some draconian penalties for those who refuse to sing the national anthem.
Earlier, Abbas had justified the introduction of the bill, stating that it’s a global practice.
However, hours after, the Office of the Speaker issued another statement, withdrawing the bill.
“The Speaker acknowledges the significance of the concerns raised and the attention the Bill has garnered, reaffirming that he will never support any action that might disrupt the peace and unity of our nation,” parts of the statement announcing the withdrawal of the bill read.
