Olympics 2024: Mixed Reactions As Super Falcons Crash Out With Zero Point

Some Nigerians have reacted to Super Falcons’ 3-1 defeat to Japan at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics women’s football event on Wednesday.
The Asian champions opened the scoring via Chelsea’s Maika Hamano in the 22nd minute.
Mina Tanaka doubled the advantage 10 minutes later, before PSG new signing Jennifer Echegini pulled a goal back three minutes before the break.
Hana Kitagawa, however, extended Japan’s lead with a sublime free kick.
The result against Japan means Nigeria are officially out of the women’s football event.
The Super Falcons had lost all three group-stage matches.
Randy Waldrum’s side had lost 1-0 against Brazil and Spain before losing their final group game against Japan.
In reaction, some Nigerians have expressed sadness over the Falcons’ performances, urging them to “go and marry and forget about playing football.”
Others urged the players to use the planned protest expected to take place from August 1 to August 10 in Nigeria as an excuse for losing against Japan.
Here are some reactions gathered by DAILY POST from Twitter:
@DrAwure: “All this aunties should go and marry. Forget football.”
@Reech_Tio: “Super Falcons should’ve used protest as an excuse to avoid this embarrassment of a performance. What is this na!”
@IbkSports: “It’s the end of the road for Super Falcons of Nigeria at the #OlympicGames and we finish last with zero point. Tough defeat despite the superb goal scored by Jennifer Echegini. It’s ALL OVER!”
@OgaNlaMedia: “Three games and three defeats for our darling Super Falcons. It was not the result(s) that we wanted, but the girls fought till the end. We need to support the coach.”
@PoojaMedia: “Super Falcons CRASH out of the #Olympics football, losing all 3 games against Brazil, Spain & Japan. Medal faith dashed in football. Goodbye, we go again. #PARIS2024.”
@MakingOfChamps: “The Super Falcons are out of #Paris2024 #Olympics, losing a third consecutive group match, which left them bottom of their group. A lack of goals have cost Nigeria dearly, with Jennifer Echegini netting Nigeria’s only goal of the tournament.”
@shittu10: “Well done. Hopefully, the coaches and players have learnt one thing or the other.”
@chidigab2000: “Losing to 3 of the best top 9 teams in the world and all former champions is not a shame. Better luck next time. NFF please give this team the necessary support consistently.”
