As the University of Ilesa is warming up to swing into full operation, the Osun State Commissioner for Finance has urged the management of the institution to work round the clock to make it a model and a pride of both the government and the entire people of the State.

The Commissioner gave the challenge during a courtesy visit paid on him,in his office, by the management of the institution ably led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu.

Ogungbile, while asserting that education is the bedrock for the success of any society, said Governor Adeleke attached so much importance to the development of the State educational sector, being a very critical part of his 5-point agenda. He then commended the Governor for taking a bold step of turning around the narrative of the institution, saying “what was meant to be a political quagmire is now being celebrated”.

The Commissioner assured the management team of the institution that the present administration, under Governor Adeleke, will write her name in gold by ensuring that all hands are on deck to put all necessary facilities in place to transform the University to a model of international repute that everyone will be celebrating and proud of like that of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

“Our Governor is a son of the soil and a listening Governor, there is nothing you want that he will not do. So do your own bit, any area that you needed our support, we are ready and willing to do so. Whatever it takes, we have to make sure that we put it in place so that it can better the future of our children “, the Commissioner stressed.

Earlier in his presentation, the Vice Chancellor had informed the Commissioner that activities that will herald the smooth take off of the University have commenced in earnest, hence the need for adequate fund for its operation. He explained that the hitherto students of the defunct College of Education have been moved to the Institute of Education under a Director who will nurture them until they all graduate, while all the programmes being run by the college are gradually phased out.

Prof. Asaolu further disclosed that the management is awaiting the institution’s resource assessment by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), after which it will be listed on JAMB’s portal for it to be accessed by prospective students, adding that the first set of students will be admitted very soon. He therefore used the occasion of the visit to solicit for regularization of the appointment of their temporary staff, some of whom, according to him, had been on the status for more than fourteen years.

It will be recalled that the College of Education, Ilesa was upgraded to the status of a University at the twilight of Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s administration.
