Imole Youth Corps : Progress Or Retrogress

By Abubakar Adesola
The Imole Youth Corps is a new social intervention program introduced by the Senator Ademola Adeleke-led People’s Democratic Party government in Osun State.
The social intervention program according to reports read on different websites online stated that the IYM replaced Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme, O-YES, introduced by former Governor of the State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and partially sustained by Adegboyega Oyetola-led government.

The now scraped O-YES was part of initiative of the APC led government targeted at getting unemployed youths some sorts of empowerment.
Aregbesola according to report in the first recruitment of O-YES recruited 20,000 youths which cut across 30 local governments and Area Council (Modakeke) and the process was seen not to be done politically.
The first 20,000 O-YES cadets were paid 10,000 monthly stipend for two years before another set were recruited in 2014.

The past APC government did not forget to make use of technology as all candidates applied through designated website.
On Thursday, 16th of February 2023 the Adeleke-led government announced the disolving of O-YES and introduction of Imole Youth Corps in a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye said the decision was taken to reposition the Youth empowerment programme inherited from the previous government for effective functionality, sustainability and dignity of labour.
“In fulfilling one of the electoral promises of His Excellency, the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke in ensuring meaningful and proper youth Engagement in the state, a new Scheme code named Imole Youth Corps is hereby put in place to engage our teeming youths in the state.

“Application forms will be available for prospective youths in all the 30 LGs including Ife East Area Office of the State FREE of charge beginning from Friday, 17th February, 2023.”, the statement noted.
If the new administration of Adeleke-led government is sincere with its plan of the scraped O-YES, Osun residents expect that flaws of the scheme should have been highlighted to the general public.
Instead of modernizing the electronic means of applying for Imole Youth Corps online the Adeleke-led government embarked on the analog method of paper application.

The highlighted processes of applications has shown that the scheme may be for only loyalists of the Governor and his party.
