Barcelona Extend Lead On Laliga Table

Barcelona’s impressive Laliga 2-1 victory away at Real Betis on Wednesday night, puts the Catalan giant eight points ahead of Real Madrid.

In their 19th league game of the season, marking the halfway point of the campaign, Barcelona moved on to 50 points thanks to second half goals from Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona had been in control from the very beginning, but struggled to break the deadlock.

Pedri was the man behind the first chances for the visitors, but he was denied three times by Rui Silva, twice in the first half and once at the beginning of the second period.

Eventually, though, a quick freekick unpicked the Real Betis defensive lock, with Alejandro Balde having space to cross for Raphinha, who turned in at the back post in the 65th minute.

Shortly afterwards, at an 80th minute Barcelona corner, Lewandowski pounced to fire in and double the lead.

It seemed, at that point, as if Barcelona would cruise to the finish line, but an absurd own goal by Jules Kounde, who chested into his own net in the 85th minute, gave Real Betis – and Real Madrid – hope.

However, although Real Betis pushed for an equaliser, they didn’t really trouble Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Barcelona hold on for the victory.
