The Catalans and Chelsea have been in talks for a while. Barca are interested in left-back Marcos Alonso while Chelsea want midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Barca are willing to let De Jong go for 80 million euros. The problem is that the player’s priority is to stay. Barca have made it clear: if he wants to stay, he can do so providing he takes a pay cut. Otherwise, he will have to choose between Chelsea and Man Utd’s options, two clubs which have knocked on his door.
The Londoners are working to persuade the Dutchman that Stamford Bridge is his best option. ‘Sport’ says that Chelsea want to reduce Barca’s 80 million euro asking price to 70. The plan involves Marcos Alonso in the deal. In other words, Chelsea have a 10 million euro price tag on the defender.
Both Barca and Chelsea want to complete this matter as soon as possible. The Spanish side have asked De Jong for an answer because La Liga is about to start and Xavi wants to know if he can count on him for the 2022-23 season.
Chelsea know that it is going to be difficult to get a yes from De Jong. According to the Catalan paper, the player is now making calculations to take a pay cut and, therefore, stay at Barcelona. If the figures do not suit him then he would think about joining Tuchel’s side.
In the meantime, Marcos Alonso is waiting. Therefore, he has asked the club not to form part of the squad for the first Premier League game against Everton. His mind is on a move away.
At the moment, ‘Sport’ reports that he does not have a full agreement with the Catalans over his contract, so he has a lot to negotiate. What is clear is that Barcelona will do everything they can to bring him to the Camp Nou.
If the De Jong move does not come off, Barca will try and sign Alonso separately. For around 10 million he could end up at Xavi’s side.
