Alex Facundo Wins Michigan High School Wrestling Trophy

Davison’s Alex Facundo celebrates his fourth consecutive Division 1 individual state wrestling championship

Followers of Michigan high school wrestling already knew that Alex Facundo had no peers on statewide mats last season.

Now, he’s being recognized nationally for the same thing.

Facundo, Davison’s four-time state champion, is the recipient of the 2021 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award given the to the top senior wrestler in the country.

The award was established in honor of Olympic and world champion Dave Schultz, whose career was cut short when he was murdered in 1996. Schultz is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and United World Wrestling Hall of Fame.

It’s been called the Heisman Trophy of high school wrestling by some observers.

“The DSHSEA recognizes and celebrates the nation’s most outstanding high school senior male wrestlers for their excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship, and community service,” according to a press release from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Facundo led Davison to the Division 1 state wrestling championship last season and was the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class for three straight years. He won four consecutive individual state titles, becoming the 30th wrestler in Michigan history to accomplish that feat.

He finished last season with a 25-0 record and was ranked No. 1 in the nation at 171 pounds.

Facundo also won world freestyle championships in 2018 and 2019, won bronze medals at the Cadet World Championships both years and was a freestyle national champion in 2017. He was invited to train with the USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator Program before the Olympics were canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a 3.5 grade-point average, Facundo has also been on the honor roll for four years at Davison.

Facundo volunteers at Caro Lighthouse Rehabilitation, coaches youth wrestlers and gives private lessons. He was the Flint Kiwanis Club’s male Student-Athlete of the Year.

He’s the second Michigan wrestler to win the Schultz Award, joining Taylor Massa of St. Johns who was the 2012 winner.

Facundo will wrestle in college at Penn State.
