Osun On The Path Of Return To State Of The Living Spring

State of Osun Government under the administration of Governor Gboyega Oyetola is currently on her journey returning to the name of the state as its was original given to her by her founding fathers.

The south-west state which was carved out of old Oyo state during the creation of more states in Nigeria by the Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida led military government on the 27th day of August 1991 was named Osun State, State of the Living Spring.

The modern Osun State’s name is derived from the River Osun, the venerated natural spring manifestation of the Yoruba goddess of the same name situated in the state capital, Osogbo attracts thousands of both local and international tourists.

But the state after a legal battle with the Okuku born Prince, Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led administration that made the current Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to reclaimed his stolen mandate on November 27,2010.

As Ogbeni Aregbesola assumed office he embarked on few changes which saw the rebirth of the state from Osun State, state of the living spring to State of Osun, state of virtue (Ipinle Omoluabi) the state anthem, flag, crest among others were changed.

One will imagine that if Ogbeni Aregbesola single handedly made the changes or was constitutionally backed by the state house of assembly.

Although, Ogbeni Aregbesola and his then cabinets and political associates understood that State of Osun was unknown to Nigerians outside the shore of the state, nationally and internationally.

Even the state map which was moulded, positioned and painted black at the entrance of the state secretariat, Abere, along Gbongan expressway till today still has the LIVING SPRING inscribed boldly on it.

A microfinance bank owned by the state government which is at Gbodofan area, Osogbo before Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola led government was known as Living Spring Microfinance Bank PLC later renamed Omoluabi Microfinance Bank, but today it has been reversed to Living Trust, Mortgage Bank PLC Bank by the Oyetola led administration which came to being in less than two years.

The reversal maybe another sign of relentless efforts of Governor Oyetola to correct what he believed to be unacceptable errors committed by his predecessor.

It would be recalled that Ogbeni Aregbesola during his last Ogbeni till daybreak, an interactive session between government and the governs celebrated the victory of Governor Oyetola which was a narrow victory against his close contender, Senator Ademola Adeleke of PDP.

Ogbeni Aregbesola in his speech said victory of Governor Oyetola of the APC was a victory for Osun to continue on the path of progress. He also noted that if PDP had became victorious many of the APC led administration successes recorded under him will be destroyed.

Not up to a year after Governor Oyetola assumed office education policy which was highly celebrated and supported by the incumbent governor of the state, who was the chief of staff under Ogbeni Aregbesola was rubbished and reversed to it previous pattern which is nationally accepted.

Should we say Ogbeni Aregbesola’s legacy is also facing the karma of his rude disrespect to his predecessor’s works in the state?
